Is there any sort of knot I can make so that this seashell will lie flat on someone's chest if they wear it as a necklace?

    A closer look )

I want to avoid jump rings if possible. I also want to avoid metal clasps. Any advice on how to close/tie the necklace without a metal clasp but still have it look nice? And, a pastel-colored silk cord would look best as the chain, I think. Do you have any other suggestions for a chain?

It's been a few years since my last quilt post. I don't have my own sewing machine yet, so while i was home over Christmas break I made two tied quilts.

Perfectly fitting icon - M.A. Inspired trinket box!

    +4 pictures )

The tin is just a 2 3/4 inches in diameter and one inch tall window tin, I bought it on Etsy a while ago and never had a use for it.

I covered the lid in a picture of fabric once made for Marie Antoinette. The paper was Modge Podged onto the plastic and embellished with gold zig-zag ribbon. (You can see the spot where the pattern is messed up ... the paper ripped while wet so I tried to cover it the best I could)

I mixed gold body glitter with the Modge Podge for the top layer, so, at different angels the picture is more gold.

I absolutely love it. No one I showed was really impressed, but I think it's pretty cool.

By the way, I'm Chelsea. Hi! I rarely ever post. You all make such beautiful things!

    Flowers made of feathers?

Hi this if my first time posting. Im getting married Oct 31st 2010 and I'm having my dress custom made. I want to make little flowers made of feathers and pearls, and a bit of tulle in varying sizes for embelishment on the top. I really dont trust anyone to carry out my vision of what I want them to look like so I'm going to make them myself. The only problem is, I have no experience with feathers at all and im not really sure how to get it to be stury and set. Is there a setting i put the feathers in or is there a way to sew them together?
I basically want something like in the picture but with pearls as the center not diamonds.
Any information on how to do this, including the best feathers to use would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Handcrafted Trees and Music
If this is not appropriate to post here, then please let me know and I'll remove it.

My husband wrote and recorded this music in the 1980s, but I think it still sounds fresh. I love this particular piece so much that I asked him if we could make a video of it with my trees and he agreed. We worked on this video over break, and had a lot of fun. Enjoy!

my first finished top for 2010 :)
My MIL's quilt top is ready to be quilted. Just not sure what I'm going to do. I may attempt feathers on my little gracie. Pray for my soul.

Anyone have a gracie or have a neat idea for quilting in 4 inch length (x width of quilt) sections? That's the downfall of the frame. My backing doesn't pucker but I only get 4-6 inches to work with due to the take up rail in the throat of the machine.

    Hello everyone,

I am new to this community and will start with the questionnaire and end with my question. I'll put the questionnaire under a cut in case it's too long!

    Click for more. )

I just saw a movie called Shop Girl. It had a beautiful, beautiful quilt that I'd like to replicate. It looked mostly simple, like a series of long rectangular pieces of fabric. Two identical pairs of fabric would be joined at the top and bottom by two other identical pairs of fabric. I don't know if the pattern has a name, but I was wondering if anyone has seen this movie, this quilt, or if they have any idea what type of pattern this is?

I'm sorry if this is too vague!

    old trading cards?
I found a bunch of old Pokemon and Sailor Moon trading cards in my grandparents' basement. I feel too nostalgic and guilty to throw them away, so what are some good uses? I was thinking of cutting out all of the pictures, laminating, and adding findings to make jewelry charms but I don't want a hundred pairs of Pokemon earrings :S

    Glue Removal Help
A couple of years ago when my grandpa died we threw together a couple "photo" boards - old photos on a piece of foam core.

I think we just used a regular glue stick, but the old photos are on more of a paper paper than a glossy photo paper.

Anyway, I want them off the foam core and I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to remove/loosen the glue that won't ruin the photos - maybe warming or a slight steam or....?

    Any ideas?

    the joy of sox
    how i knit sox
    -thanx to utube tutorials

    the written patterns
    in my mind
    just melt together.

    the pattern i follow
    is fairly random
    an improvisational
its a knit as you go
    up from the toe

    I knit loose so
I use size 1 needles & regular worsted yarn-bigger is faster
I like the double circular needle technique
because you can try them on in stages
and the cats can't pull them out as easily as regular double points

these are the 3rd pair I made
with james c brett "marble" acrylic yarn.
most sox take 100 grams of sport weight yarn per pair

I start my sox starting from the toe up
doing a double cast on- on 2 circular needles
one metal one bamboo- i match the needle by feel
casting a stitch one on one needle
    then one on the other
_ i didn't find a video showing long end cast on
    'm having troubles with embedding
you might want to do a rightclick and open in new tab or window on link
    "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KL4cVW5PJu4"

do enough stitches to cover across 3-4 toes, 8-10 stitches each
    knit the round then
increase by knitting back/front in the same stitch
at the ends of the rows till they make a cup
that makes a toe by then you have 15-17 stitches on each needle

I followed cat bordhi has knitting on 2 double needle
I knit about 6 sets of 5 between one single row stripe rows
-the picture is alternate stripes or 3 rows /green 4-5rows purple
i do it till about 3 inches from the heel
start increasing on one needle on both ends (making heel gusset)
the longer circular needle of you're following kristi style in the first video

knitting straight on the other(shorter) needle in between
    adding 5- 6 stitches
then start turning the heel(on the one needle only back and forth)

    i'm having troubles with embedding
you might want to do a rightclick and open in new tab or window on link
    "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yVikAvPuE4"wrapping and turning
    "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFrVqx-iN7k"part 2

doing a knit a stitch slip slip a stitch- i like to alternate the lips on rows
    between the turnings
go up the heel and start decreasing(k2 tog) till
till you've used up the stitches you added in the gusset
absorbed I'll decrease a couple extra to make a tighter cuff

starting back on the round of both needles going k1p1
till I run out of yarn or pateince approx 2-3 inches

do the 2nd sox before you forget how the first one went
luckily I can see the increase points and the stripes help with counting

I've done 8 pairs- I'd put off knitting sox till I was 50
I'd tried knitting on and off since i was 5, bells, afgahn age 12, a sweaters@18
didn't really get it till my saturn return(age 29)-2 more sweaters et stuff
and now I can do sox! mind you mom's been doing them for y-e-a-rs

next thing is to watch the video about doing both at the same time.

    Which machine to buy?
I'm stuck between the Janome Magnolia 7330 and the Baby Lock Grace BL40A. Both are priced the same- $399. I'm a brand new quilter starting my first class next month.

I also somewhat considering the Janome Jem Gold 3, which costs $279 comes with a bunch of quilting feet that I'd have to buy if I bought on of the other machines, but I am worried I will "grow out" of it too quickly. I could see myself wanting the adjustable speed, needle up/down button, start/stop button, and variable stitch length, which the Jem Gold 3 doesn't have. The salesman also told me the motor is more powerful in the computerized machines (the Jem is not computerized), but I'm not sure if that makes a difference in the quilting I will do.

Does anyone have any insight on any of these machines?

Do you have any advice for me?

I'm back home for vacation and it appears the local recycling center doesn't take glass anymore! So I'm looking for craft projects involving virtually every kind of glass container. Jars of all sizes, wine bottles, beer bottles, etc.

    First finished quilt of 2010
I started this before the holiday but only managed to finish it now.

The basis for it were the varying shades of creams and browns which I used in a table runner for my guy's mother's xmas present. I don't use this color palette often and didn't know what to do with the left material. Then I found some brick reddish brown fabric and put it together with the blue border. It reminds me of a candy/chocolate box so I put cherries as backing.

Now I am trying to decide what to call it...

Next I am determined to teach myself how to do One Block Wonders.

Happy 2010 everybody! I am glad we have this community!

    Quilted C
Thanks to all of you for your great feedback! I've incorporated as many of the changes as I've been able to, not having a photographer around to document me making a new set of mitts (I did a lot of illustrations in Illustrator instead), so I hope these instructions are better for the "advanced" beginner, and that I explained things a bit better. As I have to get back to writing instructions for software users tomorrow, this will be the final version (at least for a while, anyway).

I still need to tweak my inDesign template a bit, but I think this is a good start.

I make quilt tops, of course!

If that's not enough, my mom, sister and I spent a day picking out fabrics for my brother's wedding quilt we're making. I did a bunch of other stuff, but those aren't quilt/quilting related.

    Sew Crazy.
Holy cow, it's been forever since I've posted here. I haven't been on livejournal in ages!
I was really feeling an itch to share some of my work though, so I'm back, and boy, have I missed out! I forgot how much this community used to inspire me on a daily basis.

Anyway, I started sewing plushies that I coined Fuzzy Muffins in the summer of 2008 and have really loved it. :) Lately I've been feeling inspired to try a bunch of new animals and different sizes, so maybe you'll get to see some of those!

    Here's some of my work:

    Cotton flannel
I bought some lovely 100% cotton flannel on sale yesterday. I plan to use it to make a dressing gown, so I wanted something washable, which this claims to be. But now I'm having second thoughts. I figure it will shrink, but I'm worried about it felting like wool does. How should I wash the fabric? Can I put it through the dryer? Any special suggestions for pre-treatment?

    fashion design process
I'm writing an article on the steps that are taken in designing a fashion collection. Not sourcing a manufacturer, pattern development, etc...just the actual designing part.

I wanted to present readers with alternate sources of information so I was looking for articles to include as links. Only problem, I can't find any. The closest I can find is this video series which is vague and doesn't cover the whole process: http://www.ehow.com/videos-on_7575_designing-fashion-collection.html

I've been really surprised by this and am convinced someone, somewhere, on some random blog or forum must have written about this.

Do you know of any links?

I posted this only to the sew_hip community because I'm not sure where else to post....or if this was even the right place to begin with...please suggest if you have ideas.

    Finished Quilts, 2009
In January of 2009, I set out on a journey to improve my quilting skills in the hope that I would one day be able to make "the quilts I saw in my head".

At that point, having only two "real" quilts under my belt, and being entirely self taught, I wasn't sure where I was going or what I was doing, but I knew I wanted to get there.
